More Information about the Denver Broncos

Founded in 1959 as a part of the American Football League, the Denver Broncos are among the most storied teams in NFL history. The history of the Broncos can be said to have two distinct phases: Pre-Elway and Post-Elway. The arrival of quarterback John Elway in 1983 ushered in a new age for the Broncos. Elway and then-coach Den Reeves to six playoff appearances, five AFC West titles, three AFC championships, and three Super Bowl appearances (won by the Broncos opponents).

Another watershed moment for the team came in 1995, when former offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan returned as head coach and drafted rookie running back Terrell Davis. In the 1996 season the Broncos finished with a 13-3 record. In 1997, Elway and Shanahan lead the team to its first Super Bowl win, a 31-24 upset of defending champions the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XXXII. In 1998 they won a back-to-back championship against the Atlanta Falcons (and their coach – former Broncos head Dan Reeves).

In 2012, the Broncos recruited former Colts QB and Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning. In 2015 he lead the team to its third Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl 50, defeating the Carolina Panthers 24-10.

Denver Broncos Trivia

The first African-American placekicker in football history, Gene Mingo, was a Bronco from 1960 until 1964. As a return specialist for the Broncos, he also made the first punt return for a touchdown for the Broncos during an AFL game.

Comedian Robin Williams once appeared as a Broncos cheerleader in an episode of the sitcom Mork & Mindy.

During Super Bowl XXXII, running back and MVP Terrell Davis was temporarily blinded by a sudden migraine headache.

John Elway almost wasn’t a football player at all. After being drafted by Baltimore out of Stanford, Elway swore he would resign from football to accept an offer from the New York Yankees unless he was traded to one from a short list of other teams. The Broncos was on the list.

In 1977 Broncos running back Jon Keyworth released a single called, “Make Those Miracles Happen.”
